A Healthy Back - Education & Care

​“It’s not what you do, it’s how you do it!”

There is so much information out there on how to have a healthy back
- it can be overwhelming to sort through it all.
I will provide you with basic knowledge and skills to make informed decisions on how to keep your back healthy.

Choosing to follow recipes of back care doesn't work since we are all unique!


The foundation of this workshop will be to provide a base of knowledge on back health and care incorporating yoga.

What you will learn:
• Basic biomechanics and anatomy of the lower back, how it relates to the rest of the body and how it can vary.
• Common body types and movement patterns and how they relate to back health.
• Self care for a healthy pain free back - this will include stretches, exercises, strengthening, relaxation techniques and ergonomics.
• How to keep your back healthy during activities of daily life - including fitness activities and of course Yoga!

As a physical therapist and a yoga teacher, I will approach this topic drawing from both worlds.

​WHY?

Many adults have never had a meaningful conversation about their scoliosis. 
They don't understand what it is and what they can do for self-care,
so they are often fearful and worried.
Basic education and simple tips can make a big difference!
Common Questions to be Discussed:
What is scoliosis, and why do I have it?
Why is my back shaped this way?
Will I be able to walk when I am older, or will I be bent over no matter what I do?
Is it safe to exercise?
If so, how do I do so without making things worse?
How should I sit and what are good sleep positions?
What are reasonable goals for an adult with scoliosis? 
    ( stabilizing the curve/curves, managing pain, improving daily habits to minimize stress on spine - just a few examples )
Purpose:
This workshop is for adults  who would like to know more about their scoliosis
  •   Learn what scoliosis is and the different types that occur.
  •   Learn to  maintain good back health with scoliosis.


We will take a short break mid way.
I'll keep the class size small so we can have Q and A and discussions as we go!

Neck, shoulder and upper back discomfort are incredibly common. 

Most definitely our modern day lifestyles contribute to this -
along with many other things.

Come learn how to address these concerns with your yoga practice!



Often times a healthy yoga practice or fitness routine, and a relationship with your body can help keep the above in check.
Sometimes your yoga practice or fitness routine itself can become challenging, and can contribute to the problem.
If you  have the right tools and understanding of what is happening with your body and mindset, this can be avoided!


In this workshop, you will learn:
  • What is it about our body types and/or daily activities that create discomfort in our neck, shoulders, and upper back? 
  • How you can apply this awareness to your yoga practice.
  • How your neck, upper back and shoulders “work”
  • Tools for prevention and addressing pain and current injuries 
  • ​Develop a short yoga practice to help with tension and discomfort in this area
  • Tips on stress reduction and behavior modification

As a physical therapist and a yoga teacher,
